An overview of the University of Wisconsin men's basketball team's 87-47 victory over Southeastern Louisiana at the Kohl Center in the Badgers' season opener on Sunday, Nov. 11, 2012.

Player of the game

Mike Bruesewitz: The Badgers had a 12-0 lead by the time the senior forward checked into the game, but that’s beside the point. The fact Bruesewitz was back – and played well – was a huge plus for UW.

By the numbers

40-16: UW’s advantage in points in the paint.

41.8: UW’s average margin of victory in its last four season openers.

93.3: combined free throw percentage of the rest of the Badgers besides senior forward Ryan Evans, who was 1 of 8.

Free throws

Junior forward Duje Dukan decided to redshirt this season. Dukan, who appeared in just 13 games last season, was sidelined for three weeks during preseason conditioning work after coming down with mononucleosis.

“I missed most of the month of September and I felt like I could definitely contribute, but the recovery process has lasted longer than I expected,” Dukan said in a statement. “I feel like I’d be playing catch-up the whole season and I didn’t want to waste a year.”

As a basketball coach myself, I prefer to play a couple of weaker games first to get a gauge on how the team reacts against another opponen. When you have been practicing against yourself for a couple months you really don't get a good feel for your team until they've hit the floor for a real game. Playing against a strong team right away can be detrimental to a young team, so establish a little confidence. That being said they will be tested this week against Florida on the road.

Perhaps a 40 point blow out might be a really good start, but when will this be a sign the preseason competition should be a little more of a challenge.
