Jonathan Tsipis figured his team would have a little more offensive firepower this season.

But he knows not to read too much into his University of Wisconsin women’s basketball team’s 107-58 exhibition victory over UW-Platteville on Wednesday night at the Kohl Center.

“We understand we’re not going to score 107 points every night,” Tsipis said. “It’s a matter of how our execution is on the offensive end. Defensively, we’re doing some new things this year to try to fit our team a little bit better.”

UW was hitting on all cylinders most of the night, led by junior Marsha Howard’s 23 points. Sophomore Suzanne Gilreath and redshirt senior Kendall Shaw each added 14 points and sophomore Abby Laszewski and freshman Niya Beverley scored 13 each.

But the numbers that pleased Tsipis the most were the eight turnovers his team committed versus the 23 assists they accumulated.

“Can we execute better? Absolutely,” Tsipis said. “But I think you saw a tightness in this team that we’ve seen the whole preseason on being able to get the best shot.. We still have a lot of work to do, there’s no question, but it’s a great first step.”

Howard scored her 23 points in just 24 minutes, including eight in the third quarter when the Badgers shot 78 percent as a team (14 for 18).

She has been plagued by injuries her first two years but has been healthy heading into this season.

“The past two years I’ve had a rough start of the season due to injuries and different things,” Howard said. “But being able to rehab and strengthen my body over the summer and preseason really helped.”

Mueller sidelined: Redshirt freshman Grace Mueller has been lost for the season with a torn ACL in her right knee. The 6-2 forward from Verona sat out last season with a back injury.
