University of Wisconsin football coach Bret Bielema plans to meet with linebacker Chris Borland later Monday, presumably to talk about the sophomore's chronic shoulder injury problems.
Bielema said after the 20-19 victory over Arizona State on Saturday he is considering a redshirt for Bielema. At his Monday press conference, Bielema clarified the NCAA rule, which would allow Borland to redshirt if he plays in four or fewer of the first six games.
Borland has played in two of the Badgers' three games so far, meaning, he could play in two of the next three and still redshirt.
As a result, don't expect a definitive decision anytime soon on Borland, who was the Big Ten Conference's Freshman of the Year last season.
The only thing for sure now is Borland will be held out this week and will not play on Saturday against Austin Peay.
"We're only going to put him out there if it's in his best interest," Bielema said. "Obviously, the health and safety of him (are paramount)."
Although redshirt freshman linebacker A.J. Fenton has filled in Borland's spot as an outside rusher in the nickel (Badger) defense, look for sophomore defensive end David Gilbert to fill that spot now.
The coaches were hoping to use Gilbert in that spot last week, but he suffered a concussion in the second game against San Jose State and wasn't cleared until Thursday of last week.
As for wide receivers Nick Toon (turf toe) and David Gilreath (concussion), Bielema said "both have a chance" to play this week, but neither has yet to be cleared.
In depth chart news, freshman running back James White is now listed as the co-backup with sophomore Montee Ball. The coaches have been excited with White's continued progress and Ball had his best game in the opener, then didn't play as well the last two games.
"First play there, you saw (White) make that guy miss," Bielema said of White's 15-yard run in the first quarter against Arizona State. "He's got a lot of talent. James does certain things very, very well that we think he's different than John (Clay) and Montee.
"(White) is going to get more (rushing) attempts. Montee is the guy, of the three, (who) probably needs to get it going a little more."
