Scott Tolzien wasn’t out of work very long.

A day after being waived by the San Diego Chargers, the former University of Wisconsin football quarterback was signed to the San Francisco 49ers’ 53-man roster on Sunday.

It makes sense that Tolzien landed with the 49ers: Their quarterbacks coach, Geep Chryst, is the brother of UW offensive coordinator Paul Chryst.

Tolzien will be San Francisco’s No. 3 quarterback behind Alex Smith and rookie second-round draft pick Colin Kaepernick.

San Diego signed Tolzien as an undrafted free agent. During the preseason, he completed 25 of 40 passes for 302 yards with a touchdown and an interception.

Meanwhile, two of Tolzien’s former Badgers teammates landed on the practice squads of the teams that waived them in the recent roster cuts. Indianapolis re-signed wide receiver/returner David Gilreath, and Pittsburgh brought back running back John Clay.
