Each week, we'll revisit the corresponding game from the University of Wisconsin's most recent Big Ten championship team, which produced Heisman Trophy winner Ron Dayne.
Outcome: The No. 11 Badgers (7-2, 5-1) struggled to get past the Wildcats 3-5, 1-4) in Evanston, Ill., as Northwestern outgained Wisconsin 347-296, forced two fumbled that the Wildcats converted into 10 points, and held the Badgers to a season-low 197 rushing yards.
The skinny: Key interceptions by sophomore cornerbacks Jamar Fletcher and Mike Echols saved the Badgers' bacon at Ryan Field. Echols picked off Northwestern QB Zak Kustok inside the Badgers' 10-yard line in the second quarter to halt a Wildcats drive, while Fletcher did the same in the third quarter and returned his interception 93 yards for a touchdown -- the fourth interception return TD of his career.
The backstory: Wisconsin, which did not have a bye week during the Big Ten season in 1999, got away with a lackluster performance against the Wildcats, who would finish 10th in the conference, ahead of only winless Iowa.
Dayne's day: Dayne rushed 35 times for 162 yards and two touchdowns. The Badgers tailback came into the game needing to average 161 yards per game over his final three outings to eclipse Ricky Williams' NCAA rushing record.
Notable: Offensive tackle Chris McIntosh started his 47th career game, setting a program record that had previously been held by defensive tackle Mike Thompson.
Quotable: "We haven't made many mistakes," said UW coach Barry Alvarez. "The law of averages, I don't know how long you can sustain that. You're due to make mistakes and have games like this. I just feel fortunate that we didn't play near as well as we've been playing, yet you walk out with a convincing victory."
