University of Wisconsin athletic director Barry Alvarez was in northwest Ohio on Tuesday, presumably interviewing a potential head coaching candidate, multiple sources close to the UW football program told the State Journal.

I mentioned Toledo coach Matt Campbell as a potential target from that area, based on information we had received, which we were attempting to confirm.

Thanks to the Twitterverse for helping out on this one. As many people on Twitter were quick to point out, a potential meeting between Alvarez and Campbell could not have taken place on Tuesday.

The Rockets left for their bowl game in Boise on Monday night.

I apologize for the misinformation. As I said, we were in the process of checking out what we had heard. This was an attempt by me, based on information we thought was credible, to connect the dots, which obviously did not lead to Campbell.

Still, that leads to the question of who Alvarez was talking to in Ohio?

We're still working on that one. Maybe the Twitter world has more thoughts?

It's Eric Mangini.

Remember, there is another vacancy.......Volleyball. Maybe Carlson from Ohio State?

didn't he just get hired somewhere?

Jeff jagodzinski - just sayin....

Nevermind, Golden is staying at Miami

Heard that Al Golden is mulling of offer to become HC of the Badgers

Barry should just hire defensive coordinator Bob Diaco from Notre Dame. The recruits would stay with Wisconsin and he would keep Badger football, well, Badger football. We know he has great recruiting ties coming from Notre Dame. He won't be an assistant there long. Get him and let's get ready to kick Urban's team right between the eyes. ;)

Does a trip to Ohio mean he's there for a coach? Not at all. There are a lot of recruits with a lot of questions right now and Barry is doing damage control.

Maybe on the 12/12 he could talk to guys but we're in the "dead zone" now. BA can't talk to any recruits during this time.

I'd like to see Luke Fickell get an interview. He's blocked at OSU with Urban Meyer. He did well in a turmoil situation as interim coach. He's young, energetic so that'll help recruiting. Plus he know the Big Ten as a player and coach.

Not even close. They're about 4 hours apart. (NOT according to Wikipedia.)

My Mistake, I read it as “upper Arlington” rather than “Upper Arlington”. Arlington, OH is in the northwest part of the state.

Jim Tressel lives in upper Arlington (near Toledo) according to

At this point I would take Childress' experience, but the fan base would likely always hate him. I also have no idea what kind of recruiter he is......

Brad Childress?

Never heard of Clawson or any of his QBs. Probably because they're in THE MAC. If true it's made worse by the fact that Barry couldn't even get him to come to Madison and had to go to him. Completely underwhelmed if this proves to be the case.....

I often found myself "apologizing" for BB, but a lot of you got what you wished for. He's gone. Now what?

Dave Clawson, head coach at BG, is from Youngstown, NY (not Ohio). BG is #7 in the nation in total defense and #9 in scoring defense. The BG DC is Mike Elko. Boise State has a similar high ranking defense. Urban Meyer was also head coach at BG four schools ago. Former UW coach Dave McLain coached at Ball State (another MAC member) before arriving in Madison. The BG guys are serious contenders for the opening(s) in Madison or elsewhere. BG plays its bowl game on 12/27/2012. We live in interesting times. On Wisconsin!

Let's see, Dave Clawson is from, YES, Youngstown, Ohio, - the new football coaching cradle of the Pelini and Stoops Brothers along with Mark Mangino and who else am I missing? Quarterback development and pro production have been Dave Clawson staples. Nine times in his 17 years as either an offensive coordinator or head coach, Clawson’s quarterbacks earned all-conference honors, including BGSU’s Tyler Sheehan, who threw for a school record 4,051 yards in 2009. This past season Matt Schilz threw 28 touchdowns

......and Ohio University is a solid four hour drive from Toledo. Maybe he's doing some player recruiting?

Solich could be plausible due to the Nebraska link. But Solich is 68 years old. And he was 1-9 at Nebraska in road games against ranked teams. Arguably not much of an upgrade over BB.

Frank Solich.

Such football powerhouses as Heidelberg University, Adrian College, and Bowling Green are located near Toledo.

Let's hope he's NOT there to interview a coach.....

Um, but it's also been reported that Campbell was in Boise yesterday with his team preparing for its upcoming bowl game there. That report would seem fairly easy to confirm with a quick call to the Toledo Athletic Department. But there's no line in this blog post that says "Toledo declined to comment" or "Toledo did not return calls seeking comment." Seems like fairly elementary reporting.

Tom, this is a very nice write up about Matt Campbell and the Toledo Rockets. Unfortunately the only thing you got right here is "Bowling Green" Bowling Green is 20 minutes from Toledo and their head coach Dave Clauson was probably in town since their bowl game is at a later date. Matt Campbell and the entire football team left Toledo Express airport Monday afternoon at 4:00 p.m. on a Ryan Air charter for their Bowl game in Boise, ID. Here is the link to the flight.
