An overview of the University of Wisconsin football team's 24-21 overtime loss to Penn State on Saturday in State College, Pa.

Game ball

Zach Zwinak: The Penn State junior running back was a workhorse, carrying the ball 36 times for 179 yards to overshadow his more acclaimed counterpart, UW’s Montee Ball.

Thumbs up

Mike Taylor: The UW senior linebacker finished with 11 tackles, including two for loss, and a sack. Plus, he nearly had an interception and fumble recovery.

Thumbs down

Matt Canada: Freshman running back Melvin Gordon scored on a 57-yard touchdown pass on the fourth play of the game and didn’t touch the ball again until the Badgers’ final series of regulation. That’s on the offensive coordinator.

By the numbers

1-4: UW’s record against teams that finished the regular season with a winning record.

23-1: Badgers coach Bret Bielema’s career record vs. Illinois, Indiana, Minnesota and Purdue.

15-18: Bielema’s career record vs. the rest of the Big Ten.

The view

The team: This will all be forgotten if we win in Indianapolis.

The pollsters: UW is the kid on the playground who beats up all the small kids but can’t quite match up when it runs into someone its own size.

The fans: Phillips? O’Brien? Does it even matter with Canada calling the plays?

Beliema and Alvarez do a pretty good job with their commercial, but that doesn't win football games. Clean house.

the biggest reason the Badgers could not run as well after the first two possessions was because Ted Roof, the PSU D coordinator, spread the D line out at least a foot more. this caused a problem for the Badgers trying to run outside and also allowed Jordan Hill (47) to create all kinds of havoc inside.

Couldn't agree more. Shouldn't he be on a short leash already. How can Barry allow him to do what he did. I mean Canada does have experience in a different offense and I think we need to get a better passing game to compete better. And defensively we need to be more aggressive, don't get me wrong they have played good but could be better. I know it's hard when your on the field as long as they are. Just frustrating seeing where things are going. I hope Barry sees it

Matt Canada's play calling shouldn't be questioned. His HIRING should be questioned. Coach Bielema had a couple of solid years ... riding on Barry's coattails, but he has now been exposed as an inadequate B1G coach. Two more losses this year and a 7-7 finish will put him on a very short leash.

Sir, please tell me this is true. I can't take watching them get out coached and allowing ridiculous play calling. Serious I have seen that sweep play so many times and it never work. I want to see this teAm go to the next level. Seemed the defense is getting there but I want to see national champs sometime.

With all due respect; I think the "fans" aren't looking at Canada. They're looking at the increasingly perplexed face of a confused and incapable head coach. Having inside ties, I will say this only once. There is a reason the top guys left, they knew he was a time bomb and as along as he was Barry's boy they would never be heard. They also knew he would be automatically exposed when they did leave. Just had a chuckle about it with one of the dearly departed last week. They know it's over. Make the change now.
