An overview of the University of Wisconsin football team's 24-21 overtime loss to Penn State on Saturday in State College, Pa.
Zach Zwinak: The Penn State junior running back was a workhorse, carrying the ball 36 times for 179 yards to overshadow his more acclaimed counterpart, UW’s Montee Ball.
Mike Taylor: The UW senior linebacker finished with 11 tackles, including two for loss, and a sack. Plus, he nearly had an interception and fumble recovery.
Matt Canada: Freshman running back Melvin Gordon scored on a 57-yard touchdown pass on the fourth play of the game and didn’t touch the ball again until the Badgers’ final series of regulation. That’s on the offensive coordinator.
By the numbers
1-4: UW’s record against teams that finished the regular season with a winning record.
23-1: Badgers coach Bret Bielema’s career record vs. Illinois, Indiana, Minnesota and Purdue.
15-18: Bielema’s career record vs. the rest of the Big Ten.
The team: This will all be forgotten if we win in Indianapolis.
The pollsters: UW is the kid on the playground who beats up all the small kids but can’t quite match up when it runs into someone its own size.
The fans: Phillips? O’Brien? Does it even matter with Canada calling the plays?
