University of Wisconsin football coach Gary Andersen has been searching for immediate help in the secondary during recruiting.
The Badgers have gone back to the junior-college ranks to find it, securing an oral commitment on Tuesday — one day prior to signing day — from Fresno (Calif.) City College safety Donnell Vercher.
Vercher, 6-foot-2, 195 pounds, texted to Fox Sports Net that he has picked UW, according to BadgerNation.com.
He is the second junior-college transfer to commit to the Badgers this week, after quarterback Tanner McEvoy on Monday.
The Badgers had been searching the juco ranks for defensive backs, having to fill three of four starting positions in the secondary. The only returning starter is free safety Dezmen Southward.
Vercher had 23 tackles and eight interceptions this past season. A former Fresno State commit, he picked UW after an official visit there last weekend. He also had scholarship offers from Fresno State and Syracuse.
