The University of Wisconsin women's hockey team honored its seniors before Sunday afternoon's game against North Dakota.
Afterward, the Badgers accepted the Western Collegiate Hockey Association regular-season trophy.
In between, the Badgers demonstrated why they're the No. 1 team in the nation with an 8-4 victory before a crowd of 3,783 at the Kohl Center.
The Badgers, (28-2-2, 22-2-2-2 WCHA) put the game away with a five-goal second period. Ten players overall recorded points, led by sophomore Brianna Decker's four-point effort.
"I like the way we started," UW coach Mark Johnson said. "A lot of things going on, a lot of distractions, but we came out and scored a couple quick goals. It was a good game for a lot of reasons. Any time you get eight goals, you should win it."
Senior Meghan Duggan scored two goals, both on power plays, to help UW jump out to a 5-1 lead at the 13-minute, 9-second mark of the second period.
After No. 8 North Dakota (17-10-3, 15-9-2-0) responded with two quick goals, the Badgers answered with goals by Brooke Ammerman and Decker to stretch the lead back to 7-3. Decker got her second goal of the game in the third period.
Johnson noted that North Dakota played with more urgency than in Friday night's 5-0 UW victory.
"North Dakota played harder (today)," Johnson said. "However, we were able to get off to a quick start. We had a couple hiccups on some line rushes in the second period, but we responded in a positive way."
In addition to Meghan Duggan (three points), the Badgers honored five other seniors who played their last game at the Kohl Center: Mallory Deluce, Anne Dronen, Kelly Nash, Carla Pentimone and Geena Prough.
