During an interview with WQOW in Eau Claire on Friday, free agent safety Jim Leonhard said he’s been in talks with the Green Bay Packers but has had no official contract offer and no deal would appear imminent at this point.

“It would mean a lot, but we’ve had a lot of conversations with teams, Green Bay being one of them,” the former University of Wisconsin athlete said. “They’re a great organization, I’d love to play for them but it hasn’t worked out up to now. You never know what can happen in the future, but we’ll see. They’re a great organization and it’s always fun to see the fans and have a lot of family that follows them closely.”

Leonhard played for the Buffalo Bills last season, but after the expiration of his contract, he’s free to sign with any team. He had a career-high four interceptions and tied a career high with six passes defensed in 2013. He also had 41 tackles.

I first became aware of Jim Leonhard's amazing athleticism when, at 5'8", he won the football team's slam-dunk contest 2 years running. The New York Times was also suitably impressed in this article.

And I'm just as thrilled as everyone else to see another former Badger walk-on, Jared Abbrederis, wearing the green and gold.

But the fact of the matter is that sentiment in football is something we fans love to indulge but that Ted Thompson cannot afford. He's looking for youth, and he's got a ton of it at safety, including his #1 draft choice. Even if he were to pick up Jim Leonhard to serve as a role model and "coach on the field" for the pre-season, he'd never keep him on the final roster, and I'm pretty sure Leonhard understands that.

Veteran presence who does it the right way. And been a significant cog in some pretty good defenses. He's probably cheap too given the mileage. But it won't happen. Always thought it would be a good idea if Ted kept a few more of the older guys around. That's why I was happy to see William Henderson signed even when he was past his prime. But TT doesn't do that often, plus he's a badger and TT doesn't do that often either. Either way though if we stay healthy we're still superbowl bound.
