PGA Tour Q-School: Hayes' 67 lone bright spot in lackluster start for state golfers

PGA Tour veteran J.P. Hayes of Appleton opened with a 5-under-par 67 Wednesday at Deerwood Golf Club in Kingwood, Texas, and was two shots off the pace after 18 holes of the second stage of PGA Tour Qualifying School.

Middleton's Jon Turcott (74) was tied for 54th place after one round. The top 19 finishers plus ties after 72 holes will qualify for the final stage of Q-School and, after 18 holes, that line stood at 69 or lower.

At Beaumont, Calif., Beaver Dam's Dan Woltman (74) was tied for 62nd place -- 11 shots off the pace. The 20 golfers plus ties will advance to the final stage and, after one round, that line stood at 69 or better.

At Brooksville, Fla., Brookfield's Tim Cantwell Jr. (72) was tied for 51st -- 7 shots off the pace -- while  Madison's Jim Lemon (74) was tied for 66th and Milwaukee's Mike Johnston (76) was tied for 76. The top 21 golfers will advance to the final stage and, after one round, that line stood at 69 and lower.

At Panama City, Fla., Mequon's Skip Kendall (70) was tied for 17th -- 6 shots off the pace. The top 20 golfers will advance to the final stage and, after one round, that line stood at 70 or lower.

At Pine Mountain, Ga., former Marquette standout Mike Van Sickle (76) was tied for 68th -- 12 shots off the pace. The top 20 golfers plus ties will advance to the final stage and, after one round, that line stood at 68 or better.

At McKinney, Texas, River Falls' Neil Johnson (75) was tied for 75th -- 11 shots off the pace. The top 21 golfers plus ties will advance to the final stage and, after 18 holes, that line stood at 70 or lower.
