The first Balance & Believe Shootout girls golf invitational tournament is scheduled to begin with a shotgun start at noon Wednesday at Blackhawk Country Club in Madison.

Madison Edgewood coach Peggy Gierhart said Blackhawk Country Club, head pro Derek Schnarr, Matt Hartmann and the Balance & Believe Foundation, which promotes junior golf and community service, are sponsoring the event and kept the tournament going. Hartmann is the Madison Memorial boys coach, a club professional at Blackhawk and president of the Balance & Believe Foundation, according to information from Balance & Believe.

The tournament originally was started by Madison Memorial coach Don Marx in 1992 and was called the Metro Shoot-out, Gierhart said. Then it became the Suby Von Haden Invitational and later the Morgan Stanley Shootout at University Ridge Golf Course.

New Madison Memorial girls coach Britt McNett Emmerich will run this year’s tournament, taking over for Gierhart, and will be assisted by the Balance & Believe Foundation personnel, Gierhart said.
