The Reedsburg football team fell short of a miraculous win in last year's WIAA Division 3 state championship game when a late two-point conversion try failed.
On Friday night, the Beavers didn't miss the chance to score a last-second victory in a big game.
Andy Huber scored on a 1-yard plunge with 14 seconds remaining to give the host Beavers a stunning 15-10 win over Waunakee in a Northern Badger Conference game, ending the Warriors 44-game conference winning streak.
"You know, it's hard to describe. To beat a team of Waunakee's caliber, it says a lot. We're going to enjoy this one," Reedsburg coach Brian Pottinger said.
Waunakee took a 10-9 lead on a 32-yard field goal by Kassy McCarthy with 5:18 to play in the fourth quarter before Reedsburg marched 65 yards in 12 plays for the winning score.
"It was just our kids executing. That's what it came down to," Pottinger said of the final drive.
Reedsburg held the ball for much of the game on offense, trying to keep the Waunakee offense off the field.
"We told the kids during the week," Pottinger said, "the longer we had the ball, the better we were going to do."
Reedsburg junior quarterback Chad Mazur rushed for 123 yards on 16 carries as the Beavers outgained the Warriors 273-109 on the ground.
"It's great. I can't even explain it," Mazur said. "What's their streak at? Forty-four games? It's awesome to break that streak."
Added junior Matt Lennon: "This is the best I've ever felt in my life. Everyone thought we were going to get blown out."
