Verona football coach Dave Richardson trusts senior running back Dom Wise.

So much so that with Friday’s Big Eight Conference game against Madison West still up for grabs, Richardson called Wise’s number seven consecutive times.

Wise responded by grinding down the clock while scoring his third touchdown of the game on an 11-yard scamper with 2 minutes and 27 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter to help the Wildcats to a 39-29 victory over host Madison West at Mansfield Stadium.

An interception by Wildcats senior defensive back Eric Koberle on the ensuing Madison West drive sealed Verona’s victory.

“Dom’s our guys and he’s going to get the ball and he knows it,” Richardson said. “He’s our weapon and he knows what to do with the ball when we get it into his hands.”

Except for maybe on his final touchdown run.

Wise took the ball knowing that the Regents were out of timeouts and just needed two yards on a fourth down play to ice the game, but when he took the ball for junior quarterback John Tackett he saw a hole open up and was conflicted as to what he should do.

“My first thought was just to get the first down and I knew I only needed two yards,” Wise said. “But I just hit the hole and the next thing I knew I was in the end zone.”

Wise, who had 35 carries for 128 yards in the game, also scored on runs of 1 and 7 yards for Verona, which led 15-0 but then fell behind 29-15 before scoring 24 unanswered points to win.

Wise’s performance definitely stuck out, but it was a somewhat scary second quarter and how his team responded that stuck out to Richardson.

After trailing 15-0 after the first quarter, the Regents scored four touchdowns in just under eight minutes of second quarter and claimed a 29-15 lead.

“I was not sure what we were going to do there,” Richardson said. “But the guys responded and I couldn’t be more proud of the way the defense played in the second half.”Wise scored his first touchdown just before halftime and added his second score in the third quarter.

“We came out and got out to an early lead and we kind of let up a little bit,” Wise said. “We can’t do that against a good team like West and we especially can’t do that in the playoffs.”

After losing its first game of the season, Verona has rolled off seven straight wins to close out the season 7-1 overall and in conference.

“We feel like we are in pretty good shape heading into the playoffs,” Richardson said. “We our first game, but bounced back and we are looking pretty good.”

Alex Brown led the way for the Regents as he threw three touchdowns and ran in a fourth
