Grant Thielbar scored 12 minutes, 21 seconds into the second overtime on Friday to send the Eau Claire Memorial boys hockey team into today’s WIAA state championship game.

The Old Abes scored a 2-1 victory over the Waukesha North co-op in a semifinal at the Dane County Coliseum.

Thielbar scored on assists from Andrew Roberts and Josh Berg to break a tie, even though the Old Abes (24-2-2) took twice as many shots as North (21-4-3).

Memorial peppered North goaltender Garrett Larsen with 18 shots spanning the two overtime periods.

The loss cost Waukesha North a chance to avenge last year’s loss to Hudson in the state championship game.

Hudson (27-1-1) will meet its Big Rivers Conference rival, Memorial, in the final today at about 2:15 p.m.
