After falling one match shy of a state championship last season, the Burlington girls volleyball team knew it faced a tough task in its return trip to the 2017 state final.

if they wanted to take the next step and win their first state title since 2012.

The Demons showed they were up to the challenge Saturday, topping previously unbeaten River Falls, 25-20, 25-15, 22-25, 17-25, 15-13, in the WIAA Division 1 state championship at the Resch Center in Ashwaubenon.

The victory gave the Demons (35-10) their first state title since 2012 and spoiled a perfect season for River Falls (39-1).

Abby Koenen came through with the winning kill on an assist from Kaley Blake as Burlington scored the match’s final three points to complete the victory.

The match marked the first time all season that River Falls was pushed to five sets. Before Saturday, River Falls had never lost more than one set in a match all year.

Koenen finished with 26 kills and 10 digs and Brooklyn VanderHei added 10 kills and nine digs to lead the Demons.

Emily Banitt totaled 20 digs and 13 kills and Izzy Barr had 54 assists for River Falls.

A day after battling back from the brink of elimination in the semifinal match, the Lightning (45-5) captured a state championship by defeating the Ramblers in four sets, 23-25, 25-12, 25-17, 25-19.

Brooke Andersen tallied 26 kills for Lutheran and Jennifer O’Keefe added 18 kills. Molly Howe made 25 assists.

Alayna Deignan had 11 digs and four aces for Regis (20-5-1).

Clayton 3, Oshkosh Lourdes 1

The top-ranked Bears (32-2) captured the state title on Saturday, defeating the Knights (36-10) in four sets, 25-15, 25-20, 25-27, 25-22.

Alison Leslie led the way for Clayton, which has now won three state championships, with 22 kills and a block. Marissa Selena Levendoski added 21 kills and Marissa Gilbertson had 54 assists.

Ellie Mackenzie had 27 assists for Lourdes and Rachel Aasby had 21 kills.

Trailways Conference tournament champion Lourdes, which last won a state title in 1996, lost in the state final for the second straight year.
