FORT ATKINSON -- Mitzi Joseph isn't surprised about her daughter's achievements, desires and energy.

More than 30 years ago, Joseph watched her grade school student take part in duck, goose and pheasant hunts and later pursue white-tailed deer with a bow.

Now there are elk hunts in Montana, bear in Idaho to track and exotic species to discover in Africa.

Beginning 7:30 a.m. Sunday, the skills of her daughter, Jana Waller, 39, will be on display in front of a national audience in the form of a reality television show on the Versus Network.

"I'm proud of my girl," Joseph said. "It's kind of exciting."

Entitled "Ammo & Attitude," the 11-episode show, filmed over two weeks in May in Lanno, Texas, and hosted by Jody and Doreen Garrett, features six women ranging from their late 20s to their mid 50s and competing in outdoor skills such as shooting, paddling, fire building, map reading and archery.

The 30-minute show was recently awarded two Bugle awards, given to outstanding outdoor television programming, and promotes itself as a cross between "Survivor" and "The Apprentice."

These are not the women of "Jersey Shore" or the "Real Housewives of Orange County."

Contestant Marlena Gallegos, 32, of San Antonio, Texas, enjoys hunting deer, turkey and wild hogs. Becky Lou Lacock of Louisiana, is a grandmother who enjoys four-wheeling and hunting turkey in the Ozark Mountains of Missouri. Her mantra is "camo can be classy," according to the Ammo & Attitudes website.

Waller, who lives with her mother in a condominium on the eastern shore of Lake Koshkonong, appears to fit right in. In September, she will become a legal resident of Montana so she can hunt as a resident there and wants to try hunting with a recurve bow.

She applied to the show last year with a video resume and was told in October that she made the cut.

"It's six women who are a little unconventional," Waller said. "We're all a little rough and tough and all of us love the outdoors."

Waller is not allowed to talk about the results of the show but said the two weeks of living in tents and being filmed daily were nerve wracking but exhilarating. She said she would not have taken part in the show if it would have involved low-cut tops, cut-throat manipulation and women who didn't know their way around a hunting camp.

"They wanted us to hate each other but we loved each other," Waller said. "This show definitely wasn't hokey in any way."

Waller grew up in Fort Atkinson and is a graduate of UW-Whitewater. She has sold radio advertising at WFAW-AM and WSJY-FM in Fort Atkinson, worked in an eye clinic and spent 10 years in marketing for her now ex-husband's financial planning business.

About four years ago she expanded her love of shed hunting for antlers and dove into the art business by using paints and beads to decorate the skulls of elk, deer, bear and steer. She does custom work for hunters but is also trying to get other work into galleries out West.

There's also another television show in the works that is being pitched to the History Channel. Waller is teaming with two other women to create a show called "Femme Fatale." The trio travels the globe hunting grizzlies, ostrich and other wild game while showing the world that women hunting and doing their own outdoor television shows continues to grow.

"People don't understand that it's all about getting connected and feeling grounded," Waller said of hunting and other outdoor pursuits. "I always say get (women) out of the mall and into the woods because that's where I find my most happiness."
