Pfc. Amber Bahr, 19, of Random Lake tore up her blouse and used it as a tourniquet on a wounded comrade. She carried another victim to get medical help. It was only later that she realized she'd been shot in the back, the bullet exiting her abdomen.
A military spokesman praised Bahr for her clear-headed response to the shooting.
"Only after she took care of others did she realize she herself had been shot," Lt. Bob Cone told NBC's "Today" show Friday.
Lisa Pfund said her daughter joined the Army Reserve when she was 17 and she last saw her in May.
The Sheboygan Press reported that Bahr's position was as a cook for the 187th Medical Battalion. Random Lake High School Principal Keith Hilts told the newspaper that the 2008 graduate had a strong personality but a good heart.
"She could be really kind, but if someone rubbed her the wrong way she would tell it like it is," the Press quoted Hilts as saying. "They said on the news she was helping other people. That's just not a surprise to me. She a take-charge kind of gal."
