Officials with the Veterans Hospital in Madison have confirmed that Dorothy Carskadon, a 47-year-old social worker and the team leader from the Madison Vet Center, was injured in the Fort Hood shooting Thursday. The hospital said she is in stable condition.
Carskadon has had an apartment in Monona for less than a year. She also maintains a home in Rockford and has family there, said members of her church, St Chad's Episcopal Church, in Loves Park, Ill.
Carskadon, originally from the state of Oregon, was active in the church and taught adult classes in nonviolent negotiation and anger management, church member Mary Zuba-Ingram said. Another church member who declined to give her name said Carskadon has no children and is not married.
The Madison Vet Center, operated through the Department of Veterans Affairs, offers readjustment counseling and outreach services to combat veterans and their families, according to its Web site.
According to a biography from the Vet Center, Carskadon started there as a team leader in 2006 after working at the Rockford Vet Center since 1997. She served in the Army from 1989 to 1994, including a tour in the Persian Gulf during Operation Desert Shield/Operation Desert Storm.
Carskadon returned to service as a social worker and is currently serving in the 467th Medical Detachment.
