Madison-based Alliant Energy Corp. says it will invest $1 billion into building more wind power in Iowa over the next five years.

Alliant said Wednesday it is seeking approval to expand its Whispering Willow Wind Farm in Franklin County, in north-central Iowa, and it may develop wind farms in other parts of Iowa, as well.

The utility plans to add up to 500 megawatts of wind energy.

Keith Reopelle, senior policy director for Clean Wisconsin, called it "good news" for both Iowa and Wisconsin.

"It certainly makes us more hopeful they will propose additional wind and other renewable energy investments in Wisconsin, as well," Reopelle said.

He said projects like this will also show regulators and policymakers that renewable energy can bring economic benefits to states, including Wisconsin.
