Wisconsin Power & Light has started testing various types of biomass to fuel its Nelson Dewey power plant at Cassville, along the Mississippi River in Grant County.
The Madison utility company, a unit of Alliant Energy Corp., has received a research and testing exemption from the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources to try burning wood chips, agricultural pellets and native grasses in the power plant's boilers.
Over the next 12 months, WPL will look at how available the biomass is, how well it burns with coal and what impact it has on the environment.
