Larry Zanoni, executive director of Group Health Cooperative of South Central Wisconsin, will retire in July 2013, the insurance company announced Tuesday.

Zanoni was one of the first employees of the staff model health maintenance organization that began in 1976. Over his tenure, it has grown from 478 members in 1976 to 68,970 members today.

Under Zanoni’s leadership, GHC became the first HMO in the Madison area to provide preventive dental benefits, implement electronic medical records and open a complementary medicine program, the company said.
