There are some new faces on the Fox 47 9 p.m. news.
The Madison television station WMSN, Channel 47, has ended the agreement it had since 1999 for WKOW-TV Channel 27 to provide it with news.
As of Jan. 1, WISC-TV Channel 3 is serving as the news source for the local Fox network affiliate.
"We've enjoyed a long business relationship with Channel 27 and certainly appreciate everything that they did for us over those years, providing a great newscast for the market," said Kerry Johnson, Channel 47 general manager. "The move to WISC was a business decision." Johnson declined to discuss reasons for the switch.
Tom Bier, Channel 3 general manager, said officials at Channel 47 initiated the discussions. He said handling the other station's newscasts is a good business opportunity and a chance to expand Channel 3's news staff.
At least three staff members have been hired: news anchor Michelle Carolla; a sports anchor who joins the team in several weeks — his name is not being released yet; and a news producer. Channel 3 meteorologist Karin Swanson will be the primary weather person for Fox 47.
The Fox 47 broadcasts are being aired from Channel 3's regular news set, "but with a backdrop so you don't see through to the newsroom," Bier said.
With the Channel 47 arrangement, Channel 3 has ended the 9 p.m. newscasts it had produced on its digital station, TVW Channel 14.
Bier was named vice president and general manager of Television Wisconsin Inc. in late November. The company includes WISC, TVW and Channel 3000, the station's website. Bier has been with the company since 1974, first serving as weekend sports and weather anchor, and then news director and station manager, a job he held for 13 years.
He succeeds David Sanks, who resigned in mid-September. Sanks had been at the station for 33 years.
