STATE JOURNAL ARCHIVES

Learn about the pan-African holiday Kwanzaa 1 to 2 p.m. Friday and Saturday at Madison Public Library, Goodman South Branch, 222 S. Park St.

Kwanzaa is a celebration of community, family and culture and was created as a time to honor simplicity and one’s African roots. Fabu, a storyteller and Madison’s former Poet Laureate (2008-2011), will explain the seven principles that serve as a guide to spiritual and economic healing after centuries of slavery.

There will be free, family-friendly crafts and activities both days, and Saturday will include traditional African-American tea cakes and Kenyan sweet tea.
