Almost 30 years after the famous prank that saw 1,008 plastic pink flamingos land on UW-Madison's Bascom Hill, a Madison council member is proposing to elevate the profile of the maligned lawn ornament.
Ald. Marsha Rummel, 6th District, is sponsoring a resolution at Tuesday's City Council meeting that would make the plastic pink flamingo the city's official bird. State Journal columnist Doug Moe suggested doing this as well in an April 7 column.
The pink flamingo prank was pulled on Sept. 4, 1979, by members of a student group called the Pail and Shovel Party, which planted them on the lawn the morning of the first day of classes.
