A town of Vermont man killed a pit bull that was attacking his 14-year-old German shepherd Sunday morning.
Mary McMurray, 53, first tried to pull the pit bull off the couple's "furry kid," Dexter, who was attacked at their home around 10:20 a.m.
McMurray's husband, Robert Johnson, 64, heard her screams, and the couple used a baseball bat and a 40-pound iron rod to try to stop the attack. Finally, Johnson went to a shed and got a shotgun.
He shot the dog four or five times, killing it.
"I've never seen anything like it," said McMurray, who still was shaken late Sunday afternoon.
Dexter was treated for a couple of punctures above the trachea and is supposed to be released from the vet clinic today.
Lt. Brian Hayes of the Dane County Sheriff's Office said authorities don't know who owned the pit bull.
