When his wife spoke with him on Friday evening, the day after a bullet traveled through his left arm and into the left side of his chest, John Pagel "seemed himself."

"He's in pain, which is to be expected," said Kandie Pagel, 24. "The doctors said everything was good."

John Pagel, 28, of North Freedom, east of Baraboo, has been in the 467th Medical Detachment for four years, his wife said. She last saw him on Oct. 30, and he arrived at Fort Hood on Wednesday, a day before he was shot.

Kandie Pagel did not know how close her husband was to the shooter in the Soldier Readiness Processing Center.

"He just said some guy came in and started shooting," she said.

Pagel was scheduled to arrive in Afghanistan on Dec. 1, Kandie Pagel said. She didn't know if his plans would change as a result of the shooting.

The Pagels have two children, ages 4 and 9 months.

"My thoughts and prayers are with the families of the fallen and the hurt and everybody that is down there," Kandie Pagel said.
