A fire that started in a kitchen destroyed a duplex in the village of Cambridge on Saturday afternoon but caused no injuries, the Dane County Sheriffs Office said.
A fire was reported at about 1:11 p.m., and firefighters from Cambridge and Deerfield arrived to find residences at 301-303 Pleasant St. fully engulfed in flames, Sheriff’s Office Lt. Mark Twombly said.
A person who was cooking at the time tried to extinguish the fire, but was unsuccessful, Twombly said. The occupants of both residences were able to safely escape and no injuries were reported, he said. The cause of the fire was determined to have been cooking oil, which caught fire in the 301 Pleasant St. residence, Twombly said.
The duplex is considered to be a total loss with damage estimated at $250,000, he said. The occupants of both residences have found temporary housing with area families and friends.
