One deer hunter accidently shot another in the back of his thighs Saturday in Grant County on the first day of the gun deer season, the sheriff’s office said.
Rex M. Ballinger, 36, of Wauwatosa, was shot at around 8:15 a.m. in the town of Glen Haven, in the far western part of the county.
The sheriff’s office said Daniel Z. Kassees, 36, of Dousman, was trying to unload his rifle while standing next to his pickup truck when the rifle fired through the rear passenger compartment, exiting the right side of the truck and hitting Ballinger.
Ballinger was taken by private vehicle to Grant Regional Health Center in Lancaster, where he was treated and released.
The sheriff’s office said charges in the incident are pending.
