The weather-delayed whooping crane migration from Wisconsin to Florida finally got off the ground Tuesday, with 10 birds flying in two shifts to a stopover in south Juneau County, according to Operation Migration field journal entries.

At mid-day the flock was split with 10 birds at one site and nine at another. One of the 20 birds is missing, and a search is on.

The rare birds are being escorted in the air by ultralight planes with white-suited pilots and an extensive ground crew. Already delayed by two weeks, the journey of 1,285 miles can take up to 90 days.

Live video and an updated field journal of the migration are available at www.operationmigration.org.
