Fundraising efforts are ready to begin for construction of Madison's first public skatepark, volunteers from the Madison Skatepark Fund said Wednesday.
The proposed plaza-style skatepark, expected to cost $750,000, is planned as part of the first phase of the Central Park project on the Near East Side.
The city's 2013 capital budget allocates $300,000 in seed and matching money for construction of the park, allowing the group to pursue private donations and grants. The city also promised to donate almost 20,000 square feet in Central Park for the skatepark.
Several public meetings will be held later to obtain design input from local skaters and community members. Tax-deductible contributions can be made at madisonskatepark.com, or by contacting the Madison Skatepark Fund at 608-692-3459.
