A man who allegedly broke into a Downtown restaurant Wednesday night and was seen by the owner was arrested a short time later.

The smash and grab burglary happened at about 11:20 p.m. at Bandung Indonesian Restaurant, 600 Williamson St., Madison police said.

Reginald Funches, 44, Sun Prairie, was arrested on tentative charges of burglary, criminal damage to property and resisting/obstructing.

Police said Funches allegedly threw a rock through a glass door at the restaurant and stole money from the till.

"What the burglar didn't know was the restaurant's owner was inside at the time, working in the office," said police spokesman Joel DeSpain. "When the owner heard banging and then the sound of glass shattering he ran out the back door and called 911."

Officers were in the area and came on scene, spotting the suspect and chasing him down to make the arrest.

"Just prior to the break-in at Bandung, a rear window had been shattered at the nearby Essen Haus," DeSpain said. "Entry wasn't made, but it's being investigated as an attempted burglary."

DeSpain said the two cases are being considered as possibly being connected.
