A boy walking with his mom on the first day of school found two shell casings on the sidewalk, confirming to the mother the multiple shots she heard in the middle of the night.
The boy found the spent casings in the 5300 block of Tolman Terrace while walking to school around 7:30 a.m. Tuesday, Madison police said.
He was a few steps ahead of his mom when he picked the casings off the sidewalk to give to his mother. She called police.
"The mother told an officer she was awakened by five to 10 reports (gun shots) around 12:30 a.m.," said police spokesman Joel DeSpain. "She was not exactly sure where the bangs originated."
No suspects were located, nobody was hurt and no property damage was reported.
