A burglar seen by roommates early Sunday morning in their Downtown apartment stole a laptop computer before fleeing.

The burglary happened at about 2:30 a.m. at the apartment in the 200 block of West Gilman Street, Madison police said.

One of the roommates was still awake in his bedroom when the door opened.

"A stranger said he lost his phone and was looking for it," said police spokesman Joel DeSpain. "At first he thought the intruder was connected to one of his roommates."

The resident then decided to look around, and realized the burglar cut a screen, opened a window and got into the apartment.

Electronics, including the laptop, were stolen, and the burglar likely used a pillow case, also stolen from the apartment, to carry the items.

The suspect is black, 5 feet, 11 inches tall, clean shaven, wearing a dark green long-sleeved top and blue jeans.
