A drunken Illinois man being chased by police Wednesday afternoon lost control of his vehicle before crashing near Shullsburg in Wisconsin.

Clarence Campbell, 51, Rockford, was injured in the crash and had to be flown to UW Hospital in Madison for treatment of unspecified injuries.

According to the Lafayette County Sheriff's Office, the incident started in Warren, Illinois, when Campbell was stopped by police because he was driving erratically.

"As they attempted contact, he sped away," said Lafayette County Sheriff Reg Gill.

Police pursued Campbell on Highway 78 as he crossed the state line into Wisconsin. A deputy joined the pursuit near the intersection with White School Road, the chase proceeding through Gratiot where Campbell turned west on Highway 11.

As speeds went up to 80 mph, Campbell went into Shullsburg, with local officers joining the pursuit. Campbell continued going west on Highway 11 until losing control of his car near Aetna Road, the car leaving the highway and overturning several times.

He got out of the vehicle on his own and was arrested before being taken to Southwest Health Center in Platteville, then to UW Hospital.

Campbell faces tentative charges of a sixth operating while intoxicated offense, fleeing an officer and multiple traffic offense.
