A Madison man was beaten and stomped on Downtown Tuesday night, with police finding and arresting the suspect minutes later.

Edgar Miranda, 21, was tentatively charged with battery and disorderly conduct, Madison police said.

The attack happened shortly before midnight near the intersection of North Henry Street and State Street.

"Witnesses said the victim exchanged words with four men, and the foursome attacked the victim," said police spokesman Joel DeSpain.

"One suspect grabbed the injured man's head and slammed it into the ground."

The four men fled when citizens started to intervene, but police were able to find Miranda and arrested him during a traffic stop.

"The victim was disoriented but conscious when officers arrived," DeSpain said. "He was taken to a hospital for treatment."
