A Cottage Grove man was cut on the arm while trying to wrest a friend's cellphone away from a man who refused to give it back.

The incident happened at about 8:20 p.m. Friday in the 1900 block of South Park Street, Madison police said.

The 23-year-old who was cut was taken to a nearby hospital where he received stitches to close the cut.

Police said the victim's friend had loaned the cellphone to the suspect so he could make a call.

"When he asked to get it back, the suspect began to walk away," said police spokesman Joel DeSpain.

The man who was injured confronted the suspect and the fight began.

"Punches were thrown and the victim heard his sweater tearing as he was struck," DeSpain said. "He realized he had been sliced with some type of weapon."

The victim and phone owner headed off to the hospital while the suspect left with the cellphone.

No clear description of the suspect was given.
