A Madison man was mugged walking on an East Side bike trail early Tuesday morning losing his wallet, cellphone and other items in the process.

The mugging happened at about 12:55 a.m. on the Capital City Trail near Dempsey Road, Madison police said.

The 45-year-old man told police a stranger grabbed him by the shoulders and pulled him to the ground.

"A couple of young men then held him down while a third went through his pockets," said police spokesman Joel DeSpain. "He went to a neighbor's home to call police."

A police dog brought to the scene couldn't find the suspects.

No description of the mugging suspects was given.
