A man showed up at a local hospital with a gunshot wound early Friday morning after officers couldn’t find a reported shooting victim, Madison police reported.

The man’s injuries were not believed to be life threatening, according to a police news release.

The incident began at 12:14 a.m. when officers responded to a call reporting that a person was shot outside near Kipling Drive and Browning Road, near the Dane County Regional Airport, the release states.

Police said the female caller sounded distraught and hung up on the Dane County 911 Center.

Officers checked the area, but could not locate a shooting victim, the caller or anyone with information on the reported incident.

But at 12:41 a.m., a 21-year-old man with a gunshot wound showed up at a local hospital and indicated it occurred on Kipling Drive, the release states.

Police said the investigation is continuing.
