A man who said he hit women did that very thing early Saturday morning by punching a woman multiple times outside a Downtown bar, leaving her with a fractured jaw.

The attack happened at about 12:45 a.m. in the 400 block of West Gilman Street, Madison police said.

The 23-year-old woman from Madison told police she was in a bar with several friends when the suspect and another man came up to talk.

"The victim told the men they weren't interested in meeting people," said police spokesman Joel DeSpain. "One of the men confronted her outside of the bar, telling her he hits women."

She asked to be left alone, but he persisted.

"'I'm going to knock you out, I put hands on women,' the man told the woman," DeSpain said. "She was punched multiple times in the face."

Police were called and the suspect ran off when he heard police were coming.

The suspect is black, 6 feet, 1 inch tall, 230 pounds, muscular build, short hair, wearing a red shirt with gold trim or lettering, and tan pants.
