A man who appeared at a South Side home with long gashes on his face and hand wouldn't tell Madison police how he got injured or where.

The 33-year-old man from Madison was slashed Monday night, sustaining a nine-inch cut to his hand and an eight-inch cut to his face, Madison police said.

He went to a home in the 2100 block of Taft Street at about 9:20 p.m.

"He asked to use a phone," said police spokesman  Joel DeSpain.

When police arrived, he told officers he had been attacked in the neighborhood and his wallet was stolen.

"He did not want to specifically say where the incident occurred, and refused to provide additional details," DeSpain said.

Officers couldn't locate a crime scene. No description of a suspect was given.
