Two people were arrested Sunday evening for allegedly having sex in or around a car at James Madison Park, being watched and cellphone recorded by a crowd gathered around them.

Darryl Pierce, 52, and Brenda Owen, 42, both of Madison, were tentatively charged with public fornication, Madison police said.

The incident was reported at about 7:30 p.m. Sunday in the park on Lake Mendota along East Gorham Street at North Blair Street.

"One witness described a male and female disrobing each other in front of an onlooking crowd, seeming to have no concerns about being video recorded by nearby cellphones," said police spokesman Howard Payne.

Witnesses said the couple's organs were exposed while they were having sex inside their car.

"The sexual interactions between Pierce and Owen disturbed a number of families, as many were planning on having a good time in the park, but ended up with memories that may not soon fade away," Payne said.

Arriving officers also got an eyeful and had no choice but to take them into custody.

"People need to realize parks are wonderful spaces to be used by all, but everyone needs to be respectful of others, and not be involved in activities that are inappropriate for public observation," Payne said.
