A 17-year-old well known to Madison police for a series of armed robberies last year was chased and arrested on the Southwest Side Wednesday for a probation violation.

Cody Shell of Fitchburg was tentatively charged with possession of a firearm by a felon, carrying a concealed weapon, resisting/obstructing and the probation violation, police said.

Shell was seen by police in the 600 block of South Gammon Road at about 4 p.m., and took off running when police tried to talk to him.

"An officer was gaining ground on him when he hit a patch of snow and took a tumble," said police spokesman Joel DeSpain.

Officers recovered a handgun and ammunition while putting Shell under arrest.

Shell was arrested in May 2017 for eight armed robberies of convenience stores.

Court records show he pleaded guilty to one of the robberies and the other seven charges were dismissed. He was sentenced to six months in jail.
