A woman was taken to a local hospital Tuesday afternoon after getting stabbed on Madison's North Side, with the alleged attacker detained by police.

The incident happened at about 1:20 p.m. in the 3500 block of Memorial Drive, which is on the grounds of the Mendota Mental Health Institute.

"He and the woman know each other and there is no further danger to the community because of this incident," said police spokesman Joel DeSpain.

Police are investigating. There was no word as to any charges that could be forthcoming, or if the two involved were patients at Mendota.

The Department of Health Service said on Thursday that the two people involved were neither patients or staff at Mendota.
