When a Middleton convenience store was robbed last month, the clerk described for police what she knew - that the robber said he had a gun, that she emptied the cash register into a bag, and that he was wearing gloves and two masks.
What she left out, and only mentioned two weeks later, was that the robber was someone who had been staying at her home off and on for about a month, according to a criminal complaint filed Friday in Dane County Circuit Court.
The complaint charged Quinn A. McConnell, 22, with armed robbery. Middleton police Detective Sergeant Steve Britt said police haven't decided yet whether to charge the clerk with a crime.
According to the complaint, the robbery occurred on Oct. 13 at the PDQ at 6519 Century Ave. On Oct. 29, the clerk admitted having known McConnell since high school. She said that when she came home after the robbery, he was there.
"You recognized me, didn't you?" she said he asked her. She told police that she didn't immediately identify him because he was a friend and she didn't want to see him get in trouble, the complaint states.
