A deputy with the Rock County Sheriff's Office sexually assaulted an 18-year-old woman who had gotten sick and passed out from drinking during a Halloween party early Sunday, according to a criminal complaint.
Steven Stenulson, 38, of Janesville has been charged in Rock County Circuit Court with second-degree sexual assault. Stenulson was released late Tuesday on a $10,000 signature bond, according to the Rock County Clerk of Courts Office.
The victim told Milton police that she had gone to an upstairs bedroom of a Milton home after having five glasses of beer and falling asleep. She awoke with Stenulson's hand in her pants. After she asked Stenulson to stop, Stenulson kissed the woman but went to another bed in the room when he heard two other people coming into the room, according to the complaint.
Stenulson, who has been with the Sheriff's Office since 1998, was off duty at the time of the alleged incident. He has been placed on paid leave pending the outcome of an internal investigation and the criminal investigation.
Stenulson told police, according to the complaint, that he had gone to the party with his girlfriend and played beer pong before going to the bedroom. He first denied being in the same bed with the victim but later told police he laid next to her but did not assault her, according to the complaint.
