Veteran Mount Horeb Volunteer Fire Department Chief Charles Himsel has been indefinitely suspended after he was arrested earlier last week for disorderly conduct after an argument with a volunteer.

Himsel became involved in a dispute at a Fire Department meeting on Wednesday night and allegedly grabbed a volunteer by the shoulders and shook her, Dane County Sheriff's Office Lt. Mark Twombly said. Mount Horeb police and sheriff's deputies responded to the incident, Twombly said.

The fire chief was arrested, taken to jail and bailed himself out, Twombly said.

Himsel could not be reached for comment.

On Thursday, the Mount Horeb Area Fire District board suspended Himsel indefinitely with pay, village President Donald Steinhauer said.

"I am totally supportive of what the fire board has done," Steinhauer said.

The Dane County district attorney will determine whether to pursue charges.
