A Waterloo woman was charged Tuesday with embezzlement for allegedly stealing more than $150,000 from the Cottage Grove veterinary office where she worked.
Kristi L. Carnahan, 36, allegedly took the money in the form of unauthorized credit card charges and checks between 2005 and 2010 while she was business manager at the Deer Grove Veterinary Clinic, according to a criminal complaint filed in Dane County Circuit Court. She was fired in March 2010.
According to the complaint, the alleged thefts first came to light in February 2010 when the clinic's owner, Dr. Charles Frame, realized he couldn't make payroll and decided he had to lay off one of his veterinarians. He found unauthorized charges on one month's credit card statements and began to look more deeply into the clinic's finances and found $150,542 in unauthorized spending, the complaint states.
Carnahan will appear in court on Thursday.
