Eight proposals have been awarded funding through a tuition increase and associated program approved last summer for UW-Madison, university officials announced Friday.
The proposals from faculty, staff and students include ones to "cultivate international internship experiences for UW-Madison students," to add staff at the physics and chemistry learning centers and to provide international students with information about Madison and how to comply with federal visa rules, according to a university news release.
The grants in addition to money to open more sections of popular courses and hire one staff member total about $3.8 million. The grants are the first through the Madison Initiative for Undergraduates, a plan pushed by Chancellor Biddy Martin and approved by the UW System Board of Regents in July.
MIU increased tuition by $250 in this academic year and in each of the next three. The money is supposed to be used to provide financial aid for needy students and to add staff and improve educational offerings.
