Riders could see longer wait times and fewer stops on some popular UW-Madison campus bus routes this fall, after transportation officials announced possible changes to three bus routes Tuesday.

UW's Transportation Services Office said in a news release that it will propose eliminating one of the buses serving Madison Metro route 81 and combining routes 80 and 85, according to UW-Madison Communications.

The changes would mean longer wait times at route 81 stops, with buses coming every 30 minutes instead of every 15, an idea that raised safety concerns at some forums because the bus operates late at night. Officials said combining routes 80 and 85 would keep bus service the same on most of UW-Madison, but cut some stops on eastern parts of campus.

The university has said cutting back on bus service and combining the routes is necessary to keep up with budget cuts.

Transportation Services will propose the changes at the June 13 meeting of Madison's Transit and Parking Commission.
